Attensi, a global leader in game-based training, is celebrating three successful years of partnership with NHS Trusts across the Northwest, delivering innovative and effective training that reduces training time, increases competency, and keeps staff on the frontline. As well as achieving time and cost efficiencies this partnership has brought innovative, engaging, and effective training to major hospitals, including Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust.

By using Attensi PROCESS, staff can train on new systems and routines within a virtual replica of their workplace, significantly reducing classroom training time. The results have been impressive:

  • Reduction in user training time, from 6 hours to just 2 (*Statistics Gathered From Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)

  • 95% increased their understanding of IT systems (*Statistics Gathered from the Clatterbridge Cancer Center).

  • 92% increased their confidence in using IT systems (*Statistics Gathered from the Clatterbridge Cancer Center).

  • 95% of the Trust engaged with the training (*Statistics Gathered from the Clatterbridge Cancer Center).

As Jacqui Cooper – Chief Nursing Information Officer at Health Innovation Manchester & NHS GM points out, taking key staff away from wards for extended periods of time simply isn’t an option.

“Nurses have 12-hour shifts where their patients are always the priority. With Attensi training, they can focus on their patients while completing relevant modules in three-minute bite-sized sessions. The simulation training is engaging, and we knew we were on the right track when one nurse completed her training module on a night shift, causing others to try to beat her score. There’s no way a nurse can or should be in a classroom for eight hours, so with three-minute training modules that can be completed on a shift, that’s the pure joy of Attensi. We absolutely could not bring those nurses out to classroom training for eight hours. We just shouldn’t do that. It’s not an effective use of time.”

On measuring competency Jacqui adds, “The difference with Attensi is we can see the competency so we can pick up and at board level. You know, how many staff have attended the training, are competent with the training, and I suppose more importantly, are not competent. And we’ve never been able to do that before to actually be able to prove that we’ve closed the knowledge gap and we’ve got full compliance.”

The training is vital to help keep patients safe, as explained by Ethan Darry, Digital Training Coordinator: “I train staff on a digital prescribing platform, so it’s important they understand it fully. Patient safety is paramount at the NHS, and without staff using EPMA correctly, patient care can be jeopardised. Attensi ensures staff are competent with EPMA by creating a safe space where they can practice, build confidence, and complete tasks correctly through repetition. The wards are that busy that they cannot release staff for a long space of time. This improved competency directly translates to safer and more effective patient care”

The game-based nature of the training makes it highly engaging for NHS staff rather than a tick-box exercise: Amy, Senior Therapeutic Radiographer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, “We need regular updates on the digital technology we use to work efficiently. Attensi training was exciting and reminded me of SIMS, which I love to play. It’s highly personalized, using my name and an avatar that looks like me. With headphones on, I’m fully engaged and feel like I’m in a workplace setting. Since Attensi training, I use Meditech more efficiently, streamlining appointments to 10-12 minutes, allowing me to see and help more cancer patients per day, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.”

Naomi Fraser, Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Manager at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre praises the personalisation of the training, “Attensi training has helped me train a large number of staff in their preferred learning style. Mindful of the Staff Disability Network, Attensi means I don’t have to run through the same content three times in visual, kinesthetic, and auditory formats, saving a lot of time. The training is absorbed through reiteration, making it refreshing and engaging.” Attensi’s platform allows for personalised learning experiences, catering to various learning styles and ensuring that training is effective for all staff.

Attensi’s relationship with NHS Northwest is set to continue and expand.
