Dr. Manmohan Singh turns 92: Leaders celebrate his legacy of reform

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh celebrated his 92nd birthday on September 26, 2024, as leaders across India paid tribute to his enduring legacy of economic reform and selfless public service.

Born on September 26, 1932, Dr. Singh’s illustrious career is marked by significant achievements in both economics and politics. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, laying the foundation for his future contributions to national economic policy.

Dr. Singh’s most pivotal role came in 1991 as Finance Minister under P.V. Narasimha Rao’s government, where he led India’s economic liberalisation. This transformative period opened the country to foreign investment and reduced government control over the economy, unleashing competitive markets and driving significant growth.

As India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh became the longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. His tenure saw several landmark initiatives, including the introduction of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later renamed MGNREGA, which aimed to enhance livelihood security in rural areas.

On his birthday, leaders from across the political spectrum extended their warm wishes. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, commended Dr. Singh for his “humility, wisdom, and selfless service in shaping our country’s future.” Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President, described him as “a rare embodiment of simplicity, dignity, and ingenuity in politics.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wished Dr. Singh good health and longevity, while Congress leader Jairam Ramesh highlighted his “grace, sobriety, humility, and dignity,” noting their rarity in public life.

As India celebrates Dr. Manmohan Singh’s 92nd birthday, his legacy as an economist, reformer, and statesman continues to influence discussions about the country’s economic and political future.
