UK workers seek employer help with everyday expenses amid persistent cost-of-living crunch

Perkbox, the global rewards and benefits platform, reveals new proprietary data showing its users have increased their use of employer provided supermarket vouchers* 54% between June 2023 and June 2024, as employees seek support from employers to manage their everyday costs, such as groceries.

The data from Perkbox’s platform, which supports more than 3,500 companies and includes the supermarket redemptions of over 80,000 UK users, shows the cost-of-living crisis is continuing to bite, with workers increasingly relying on support from their employers to make their food shops more affordable. Comparing the number of redemptions in June 2023 and June 2024 for three of the UK’s largest supermarkets we can see:

Asda redemptions increased by 69%;

Tesco redemptions increased by 45%; and

Morrisons redemptions increased by 33%.

According to the Office for National Statistics the past two years have seen the price of food rise by 25%, nearly three times as much as the entire decade before (9%), demonstrating that despite the fall in the UK’s headline rate of inflation, the cost of everyday goods remains high.

Doug Butler, CEO of the Perkbox Vivup Group, commented: “Despite fewer recent headlines, the continuing high cost-of-living continues to be a challenge for employees. Our data is as a reminder that offering support through additional rewards and benefits to workers should remain a priority for employers.

“Ultimately, the businesses that provide additional support during economic uncertainty not only support employee wellbeing, but also differentiate themselves in a competitive job market.”
