Is your business future-proof? Four tips to help adapt

Businesses and employers have been offered tips and advice on how to future-proof their workforces, to ensure their organisations don’t get left behind.

As many roles and processes become increasingly automated, in-demand skills constantly evolve. So, how do you make sure your work environment is adapting and growing with the changes?

To help understand ways to future-proof the workplace, the team at Craft Docs, the company building the future of documents, has revealed their expert advice and recommendations.

A spokesperson for Craft comments: “One of the biggest challenges that many businesses are facing at the moment is the fact that AI and technology are advancing at such a rapid rate, and most companies still don’t understand it fully.

“We, along with other experts in the field, are seeing how AI and similar technologies are already revolutionizing the way we work – in all industries.

“Therefore it’s vital to incorporate these technologies into your organization wherever possible and practical, so that your business doesn’t get left behind.”

Here are four ways to future-proof your workplace in 2023:

Upskill and train your staff

In order to ensure that your workplace is ready to withstand any technological and innovative advancements that come our way, you need to make sure that your staff and employees are continuously upskilled and trained to meet the requirements of the business, alongside any wider industry and technical changes. This applies to both adopting new technologies like AI, as well as developing skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration and even an engineering mindset.

We’ve just entered into the era of companies going mean and lean while still striving to increase efficiency, productivity and the bottom line, so upskilling your employees in areas that aren’t directly related to their day-to-day work can help improve communication and productivity, even with a smaller overall workforce.

By upskilling your staff, your business will gain a competitive advantage against other companies within your industry. Another benefit is that your staff will feel valued and therefore happier, and much more likely to do good work.

Embrace and incorporate AI

With the rise of AI over the last year in particular, it’s so important to embrace and begin to incorporate AI into your business, so that you don’t get left behind. AI is developing at such a rapid rate, but it’s more accessible than ever. Therefore, employees across the board should be incorporating AI into their workflows and shouldn’t be waiting for managers to tell them how to do it.

At Craft for example, each department is responsible for exploring how these new technologies can improve their workflows and remove friction.

In fact, instead of just using AI as part of your business strategy and operations for efficiency, businesses can also use it to upskill and train their employees. AI can analyze individual employee’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles to provide personalized training modules for example. AI can also support immersive learning experiences through virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications. So with AI tools and programmes, businesses can upskill their staff a lot quicker with minimal hassle.

Understand your employees’ needs

In order for your workplace to be future-proofed, understanding and catering to your employees’ needs is essential as doing so will directly impact their performance, productivity, and overall job satisfaction.

Therefore you should strive to understand what your employees need to carry out their day-to-day tasks, but also what they feel they need to improve and excel, alongside how to create a comfortable and inspiring environment.

When employees have access to technology that aligns with their needs, they are more likely to feel valued, empowered, and engaged in their work. Understanding their preferences and providing the right technological resources can contribute to job satisfaction and improve overall employee morale.

Also, make sure that you consider and offer flexible working to your employees, allowing them to work from home if wanted or needed. You should also allow them to be flexible with their day-to-day hours where possible, as long as it doesn’t have a negative impact on the business.

Prioritize the environment and sustainability

In today’s world, it’s become more and more important that businesses are putting the environment first and being organizations that are seen to prioritize sustainability. Climate change is at the forefront of most people’s minds in 2023, and unfortunately businesses play a significant role in contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. By prioritizing sustainability, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint, adopt cleaner technologies, and contribute to mitigating climate change.

Therefore businesses need to consider the impact that their offices and general workforce have on the environment, from paper use, waste reduction, recycling, energy use and even air quality.

Businesses should incorporate sustainability efforts into their day-to-day operations, alongside their materials and office buildings.  Sustainable practices help conserve finite resources such as water, energy, and raw materials. By reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and embracing circular economy principles, businesses can operate more efficiently and minimize their impact on natural resources.
