The UK cities with the most night shift workers

Night shift workers are an essential part of the UK economy, with so many industries needing to keep operations running while the majority of people sleep.

Research from bespoke material and handling equipment manufacturers, BlueTrolley has revealed which UK cities have the highest percentage of nocturnal workers using ONS data.

The data shows that Bath is the city with the highest percentage of night workers, having 38,000 out of a population of 101,000, accounting for a huge 37.62% of its residents. 

Exeter follows in second place, with 39,400 night workers making up 29.98% of its 131,400 population.

Manchester, one of the largest cities in the UK, has 172,500 night workers, accounting for 29.92% of its 576,500 population.

Next is Derby, with 75,700 night workers representing 29.04% of its 260,700 population.

Oxford, known for its prestigious university, has 44,500 night workers, making up 28.18% of its 157,900 population.

At the other end of the spectrum, London, despite being the largest city in the UK, has the lowest percentage of night workers. With 77,500 night workers out of a massive population of 8,961,989, only 0.86% of London’s residents operates during the night.

Next is Dover having 14,900 night workers, representing 12.50% of its 119,200 population. The city’s port and associated services require some night work, but not to the extent seen in other cities.

Rochdale’s 30,300 night workers constitute 13.58% of its 223,100 population. While there are night-time operations, they do not dominate the employment landscape.

Following is Newcastle-under-Lyme, having a night workforce of 18,200 people, equating to 14.08% of the population.

Wigan places next, having a slightly higher percentage of nocturnal employees (14.42%) working out at 47,500 of its 329,300-strong population.
